The key feature of a Derby shoe is the way the laces are attached to the shoe.
The upper of a Derby shoe is made from a single piece of leather. This means it extends directly into the tongue, with the side panels stitched on – a style known as “open lacing.” This is in contrast to Oxford shoes, which have “closed lacing.” In American English, Derby shoes are sometimes referred to as Bluchers, while in the UK, the term “bucks” may be used if the upper is made of buckskin. A leather shoe for men with open lacing is generally perceived as more relaxed and suitable for everyday wear than a closed-lacing shoe. They pair especially well with a classic sports jacket.
